How to Create a Profitable Online Course

By October 30, 2021No Comments

Help others by teaching what you already know AND create a reliable, passive income.

Do you work independently but suffer from the feast-or-famine of an unreliable income?

Do you want to help people improve but don’t know how?

Do you want to be perceived as an expert in your field?

Do you want to improve your business and stop trading time for money?

If your answer is “Yes” to any of these questions, then you should consider creating a course.

Why?

Because eLearning is the biggest trend of the next 5 to 10 years. It has developed into a 5.2 Billion Dollar Industry (CNBC, 2017) and is projected to grow to $331 bln by 2025 (Research&Markets, 2017). Recent surveys show that 40% of companies want to invest in eLearning platforms for their staff (Bottom Line Performance, 2018).

If this surprises you, consider this: Almost everyone has internet access these days. But relevant and affordable education is incredibly scarce.

So what do all those passionate, hard-working people do? They take their education into their own hands. They improve themselves with the most accessible form of education: online courses.

This has created a great demand for online courses and many successful educators, coaches, consultants and professionals have built a reliable passive income by making these courses.

But if you consider creating your own course there are some major pitfalls you need to avoid.

Mistake #1: Not Leveraging Existing Marketplaces

Don’t try to sell your course all on your own when you get started. Instead, use existing marketplaces like Udemy or Skillshare.

If you leverage existing marketplaces you save a huge amount of money on ads. Ads that might not even work if you’re not perceived as an authority in your field.

Instead, take advantage of these marketplaces that already have an advertising budget and can generate traffic for you.

And if you already have a course you can create free “Mini-Courses” for these platforms and then upsell them your full course.

Mistake #2: Not Making Your Courses Specific

As already mentioned, the people buying your course are self-taught and looking for a specific solution.

So don’t waste their time with fluff. Get straight to the point. Keep the number of steps to a minimum. And unless you already have a big brand, avoid Masterclasses.

Mistake #3: Not Optimizing Your Search Ranking

Most course creators think that once the course is done their work is over. But how you rank in your marketplace determines how successful your course will be.

So you need to make sure you ascend to the top by optimizing your title, course description and curriculum.

You should also look into keywords and use social media promotions to gather feedback and reviews. If done correctly, this will quickly push your course to the top of the trending list.

Mistake #4 Only Creating a Single Course

Splitting your content into multiple smaller courses has many benefits. First, more people find your courses through searches. Second, adding a new course will bring in new customers. Then you can sell those new customers your old course.

Therefore the power of cross-promotion can more than double our income even though Udemy market limits how much you can charge for a course.

All the while being more present on all platforms and having more social proof.

Mistake #5 Not Nurturing Your Existing Customers

What do you think is easier? Acquiring a new customer or selling to an already existing one? Of course, selling to an existing customer!

So make sure you build an email list by offering supplementary materials in exchange for your students’ email addresses.

And don’t forget about social media. Invite students to a facebook group, encourage engagement and actively build your tribe.

A tribe of loyal customers is worth their weight in gold. Whether you want to stop worrying about losing clients or more stability in your income … Just imagine how good it would feel to have a tribe of people excited to hear from you and do business.

Mistake #6 Not Hosting Your Courses on Kajabi/Thinkific/Moodle

If you host your courses on these platforms you can escape unpredictable ranking and compensation algorithms of marketplaces like Udemy and Skillshare. While they are a great start, you ultimately want to have control over your platform. Hosting your courses on multiple platforms will also reinforce your authority in your market.

This allows you to focus on higher priorities in your business, increase prices and create premium offers.
